Alejandro Escovedo Musical Experience-Leonard Cohen Influence - 8:00 pm310 Willie Nelson Boulevard Austin TX 78701 USA (877) 435-9849
The 4th annual ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO MUSICAL EXPERIENCE returns to ACL Live on Saturday, January 9, 2016!
It will focus on the influence of Leonard Cohen.
There are songwriters who sing their songs, and then there are songs who sing their writers.
ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO is one with his muse and his music. Over a lifetime spent traversing the bridge between words and melody, he has ranged over an emotional depth that embraces all forms of genre and presentation, a resolute voice that weathers the emotional terrain of our lives, its celebrations and despairs, landmines and blindsides and upheavals and beckoning distractions, in search for ultimate release and the healing truth of honesty. Sometimes it takes the form of barely contained rage, the rock of punk amid kneeled feedback; sometimes it caresses and soothes, a whispery harmony riding the air of a nightclub room, removed from amplification, within the audience.
His rise has been gradual, a steady incline rather than a quick ascendance, but it has deepened and burnished his music, made it closer to the bone, where it begins to break, deepening his insight and his ability to find that insight in performance. His tireless touring, and dogged determination to place one album after another, has taken him through many musical scenes, remaining the same persona within each, of an artist who doesn’t settle for the easy way out.
It is a journey that has taken him from Texas to California to New York and back again to Texas, encompassing a breadth of music as varied as the many bands he was part of before embarking on a solo career. In the 1970s, he surfaced on San Francisco’s no-holds-barred punk scene centered around the Mabuhay Gardens in North Beach, a guitarist in the Nuns; Rank & File helped unite the disparate worlds of punk and country in the 1980s; and after he moved back to Austin, the True Believers combined all manner of Americana music in a harbinger of what was to come in Alejandro’s solo career which begun in 1992 with the album Gravity.
Julie is proud to be a special guest on this show, along with Mitch Watkins, another former Leonard Cohen collaborator!

here's what Nashville Scene said about my band:
from the NASHVILLE SCENE JULY 2014
There are plenty of great singer-songwriters in East Nashville, but very few with a résumé that rivals Julie Christensen’s. Christensen, who moved to town from Los Angeles a year ago, was a member of renowned ’80s L.A. punk band The Divine Horsemen (with then-husband Chris Desjardins), followed by a lengthy stint in Leonard Cohen’s band. (She’s featured in Lian Lunson’s 2005 doc Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man.) She’s worked with Iggy Pop, Public Image Ltd, Todd Rundgren, John Doe, Exene Cervenka, k.d. lang and more. Suffice to say, she’s got cred. Her 2012 album Weeds Like Us is an intoxicating blend of gritty roots rock and old-school soul. Highlights include the lead track “Restless,” a steamy dose of bubbling country funk; the moody ballad “Outside”; and the swampy, yearning “Call Me Up.” Christensen may be new to town, but she wasted no time finding a stellar backing band, including guitarists Sergio Webb and Chris Tench, bassist Bones Hillman and drummer Steve Latanation. Reckless Johnny Wales opens.

Humanities Tennessee's Southern Festival of Books: A Celebration of the Written Wordsm was first held in Nashville on the second full weekend (Friday-Sunday) in October, 1989, and has been held annually on the same weekend since then. One of the first book festivals of its kind, it has inspired hundreds of similar book festivals throughout the nation and beyond.
The Festival has always been a free event that offers readers and writers an opportunity to interact, to create a public community around a festival that promotes and celebrates the joy of reading and of lifelong learning. Each year the Festival brings to Nashville approximately 200 of the nation's and region's most prominent authors. Books by all the participating authors are available for sale at Festival book sales area where proceeds support the Festival.
In addition, the Festival hosts popular book exhibitors and programs three performance stages throughout the event. The Chapter 16 Stage highlights readings and other literary performances. The Café Stage features music by some of the area's most talented songwriters and poets. Special events for children take place on the Youth Stage including appearances by favorite characters, musicians, artists, and storytellers.

Julie Christensen and Band Return to the Wash! - 8:30 pm Reckless Johnny Wales, 9:30 pm Julie and Band2038 Greenwood Ave. Nashville TN 37206 US 615-226-6070
On Thursday, July 24th, Julie Christensen will take the stage at the beloved Family Wash in East Nashville. Joining her again is her stellar band from early June: Sergio Webb and Chris Tench on guitars, Bones Hillman on bass, and Steve Latanation on drums. This is a rock ‘n’ roll aggregation with no shortage of cred on the world stage, and great fun was had earlier this summer, so the Wash’s Jamie Rubin wanted to “keep it rolling.”
A stylistically gymnastic songbird, Christensen has a resumé that includes work with Leonard Cohen (on two tours and a couple albums,) Todd Rundgren, Robben Ford, Iggy Pop, Van Dyke Parks, John Doe, Exene Cervenka, Steve Wynn and Lou Reed. From 1983 to 1987 Christensen was a member of the post-punk SST band Divine Horsemen with her former husband Chris D. The Iowa native's 5th solo album, "Weeds Like Us," produced by Mavis Staples' band member Jeff Turmes, came out late in 2012 and made some end-of-year lists. Boasting Julie’s longtime pals, some of Southern California's most sought-after studio musicians, "Weeds" is a collection of songs for the unlucky, brave, and tough. Julie made the move to East Nashville almost a year ago, with Amelia White's insistence and the blessing of several friends in the Americana community, and is riding on a surge of activity in her long career. Julie and band play at 9:30 pm
Reckless Johnny Wales emerged as soon as Bob Saporiti retired, in 2001, from 17 years of work at Warner Bros. Records, as Senior VP, and General Manager of AOL/Time-Warner. In 2003, Reckless Johnny released his twisted album of original music, "It's Not About the Money," featuring a who's who of famed studio musicians including Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, drummer/percussionist for Nanci Griffith Pat McInerney, Michael Snow, Clive Gregson, and Shawn Camp. Reckless' harmonica chops have graced many a stage and recording, and audiences are in for a treat when this man makes an appearance as a performer. He kicks off at 8:30 pm

Ventura's Happening Wednesday Hotspot will be the place for a fun summer evening of music. Come see what all the buzz is about!
Half a block from a well-known taco shop, behind a carwash, and in front of a generic apartment complex is a small building that sits far back on a side street in Ventura.
As you approach, there seems to be a garage party going on with a band playing inside. Small groups stand outside chatting and smoking.
Depending on your vantage point, the interior resembles a coffee shop, a small theater, an art studio, a tiki lounge or a residential scrap yard.
In the bathroom, hanging on every wall, are dozens of clocks.
Should you find yourself at the spot on Ventura Avenue, you've ventured into Green Art People, a place where music meets art meets big business meets the environment...
Household Ink @ 25 - 7 pm1221 State Street Santa Barbara CA 93101 US (805)962-7776
a “microfest,” celebrating 25 years of Household Ink Records, SOhO, May 21
What: “HI@25,” a “microfest” with multiple acts on the Household Ink Records label
When: Tuesday, May 21, 7 p.m.
Where: SOhO, 1221 State St., Santa Barbara
Info: (805) 962-7776, www.sohosb.com
Who: Headless Household, Natalie D-Napoleon, Julie Christensen, Lucinda Lane, Zen Horse Repair, and…?
Article on Household Ink Records, Down Beat magazine, September, 2012
Santa Barbara-based label Household Ink Records was born, out of necessity and curiosity, in 1987, as an outlet and “in-house” label for the eclectic band Headless Household. By the early ‘90s, the roster and the sense of a future had grown, including acts such as flapping, Flapping, Dudley, Lean-To, Fringe Deities, Nate Birkey and more.
Cut to 2013, and the genre-diverse label is 25 years deep and with a catalogue of 36 titles (with eight by Headless Household) and counting. It’s a ripe time for another “microfest,” of the kind the label had five years ago at SOhO.
Welcome to “HI@25.” On Tuesday, May 21 at SOhO, for three hours-and-change, a handful of acts on the roster will kick up sonic dust, including the still description-defying Headless Household, respected “Americana” artists Julie Christensen and Natalie D-Napoleon (the label family’s newest addition), the wily coyote-esque Zen Horse Repair, and Lucinda Lane, a brand new band, presently hatching and going public.
This is a special gig for Headless Household in that Julie Christensen, its longstanding, outstanding and beloved vocalist, is moving on over to Nashville this summer, bringing a dozen-year Headless chapter to, not a close, but a quasi-hiatus. We hope. Also joining the Household same-olds – Dick Dunlap, Tom Lackner and Joe Woodard – at SOhO are Tom Buckner, Bill Flores, Sally Barr, Tom Ball, and possible surprised guests.
Headless Household has a discography of eight titles to date: Headless Household (1987), Inside/Outside USA (1993), ITEMS (1995), Free Associations (1999), mockhausen (2000), post-Polka (2003), Blur Joan (2005) and Basemento (2010). They are currently in kickstarter mode, with a campaign to raise greenbacks for their ninth album, and all-ballads affair (linkage here).

"The close presence of the woman", Leonard Cohen, singer, songwriter, poet, novelist, unflinching sage and celebrated ladies man has said, was always "a very important element. The presence of the female voice allows my voice to speak more clearly - and I've needed to hear them." Women who have sung and toured with him join the session, moderated by the author of I'm Your Man: The Life of Leonard Cohen, which Rolling Stone said made every prior biography "practically unnecessary".

Remembering Kenny Edwards - 7:30 pm185 East Santa Clara Ventura CA 93001 US 805-652-1137
Kenny Edwards (February 10, 1946 – August 18, 2010) was an amazing singer/songwriter and a good friend to Zoey's. Our big hall is named after Kenny. He was a founding member of The Stone Poneys and a long-time collaborator with both Linda Ronstadt and Karla Bonoff. Kenny's career spanned four decades, consumed thousands of studio hours, countless thousands of air miles and created libraries full of hit songs. Kenny was not a household name except to those in the industry, but he was a very influential part in musical history, especially where it pertains to the development of country-rock music and its boom during the '70s. With the release of his 2nd solo cd, Resurrection Road" Edwards, who for most of his career was the consummate backup ace, finally took a more prominent position on stage before his all too soon passing. Resurrection Road is a beautiful legacy of his best work. www.kennyedwards.com
WE HOPE TO DO KENNY'S MEMORY JUSTICE BY GATHERING TOGETHER TO HONOR HIM IN SONG.

Marty Nation, a California native, was born in Northern California, and moved to Hollywood, and then Topanga's "rodeo grounds" where he attended grade school in Malibu. His generation were the real life Spicoli kids that Sean Penn spoofed in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Only Marty wasn't a stoner or a beach bum. He and rockabilly rebel Colin Winski combed their hair into a duck tails, wore leather jackets and listened to Elvis, The Stooges, The Ramones, and other bands not yet realized by their peers in the late 1970s. Marty discovered glitter and The Dolls, and became somewhat of a legend himself in Hollywood, with notorious stories told about him by visitors to Hollywood's legendary "Disgraceland."
So many who know Marty have a tale to tell about him. He's the guy we all wished we had the guts to be, only it would take showing our darker sides to the world, and not many have those guts. It was Marty who kicked the door down and let the flood of kids in to see the Ramones the night the riot squad was called out to the Palladium in early 80s. The kids weren't having a riot at all. They just wanted to get in. I guess it was at capacity, and the fire marshals were holding everyone back. Marty just kicked the door in and let us all flood the Palladium. It was a rollicking show and nobody got hurt, but on the way out, helicopters flew over, and police were out with billy clubs, to give those punks a good beating for violating the fire code.
A motorcycle enthusiast by the age of 10, Marty raced speedway, drove classic cars, and played in a garage band with his brother Johnny. While still in his early '20s, Marty went on tour as roadie to Levi & The Rockats, then came back to Los Angeles to work in auto mechanics and hairdressing. He opened his own salon, The Martin Nation Salon and was known for "foxifying" his clientele.
In the mid-'80s, he formed his band Crowbar. A garage band pile-up, featuring pals Peter Andrus, Drew Steele of the Surf Punks, Ace Farren Ford and Hermann Senac of Blood on The Saddle, and in an earlier lineup, Wayne James and Andy Seven. They released an album, Crowbar Salvation, and the band took the name Crowbar Salvation.
After meeting wife Catherine, and having baby Molly Jo, the family moved east, where Marty attended The French Culinary Institute in NYC, and launched yet another career as a chef. They moved back to California, where Marty landed a job at Malibu's Promises, later opening his own restaurant The Iron Pan in Ojai, based on is mother's old iron pan.
Now living at beach with his wife Catherine and two dogs, things came to a screeching halt when Marty was hit by scaffolding that fell off a truck, as he was riding his motorcycle at 60 mph on the 134 freeway, near Los Angeles. Marty survived, but has had to endure extensive surgeries. With another 18 months left to recover and another hip replacement on the way, his family is overwhelmed by the support shown by family and friends to come together to help. Candye Kane spearheaded benefit performances for Marty where she'll be performing, along with many others. (see above)
The people whose lives Marty has graced do not forget him. As the Shaheen family recently posted on Marty's Tumblr page (www.martynation.tumblr.com), "Marty was always there for anyone in need and he was there on 9/11 when thousands lost their lives…he was one of the first to answer when there was a need to feed the thousands of men who were on the scene to dig through the rubble looking for suvivors…he provided food for the unsung heroes, for he was a hero himself…he cooked nonstop for days and nights providing over 150,000 hot meals to the char-faced firemen who came into his tent for a warm meal…yes Marty, I will not forget what you did for these men….you never once complained about the conditions at Ground Zero….you did what you had to do, and you did it your way….I have so much respect for you…"

Headless Household pays tribute to friend and ally Kenny Edwards with "Remembering Kenny," featuring the band, and guest singer-songwriters
Monday, March 21, at SOhO
Who: Dick Dunlap, Tom Lackner, Joe Woodard, Julie Christensen, Tom Buckner, Jim Connolly, Sally Barr, Bill Flores, Tom Ball and ? Guest singers include Rebecca Troon, Natalie D-Napoloen, and more
Proceeds will benefit Sarah House Hospice Center
Members of the eclectic group Headless Household were among the many shocked and saddened by the passing of the wonderful musician Kenny Edwards last September. There was a highly personal connection in that Edwards had recorded and performed with the band for seven years, always game to join in the band's style-hopping antics and enriching the band's music, especially the "Americana" chapter of the band's songbook.
In tribute to Edwards' contribution to the band, and to the music of other artists in his adopted hometown of Santa Barbara, Headless Household is hosting a tribute night, Monday, March 21 at SOhO. "Remembering Kenny" will feature a set of its own music which involved Edwards, live and on record (he was involved in the albums post-Polka, Blur Joan and Basemento). An opening set will feature singers connected with Edwards' work, as producer, guitarist, vocalist, mandolinist and all-around supportive, spiritually centered and deeply musical persona.
Edwards, who moved to Santa Barbara a decade ago and got enmeshed in its musical community (including with Headless Household) had finally begun recording as a solo artist in the last chapter of his life, releasing the wonderful albums Kenny Edwards (2002) and Resurrection Road (2009). This capped off a stellar resume including working with Linda Ronstadt, starting with her earliest public phase in the Stone Poneys, working as an important architect of the '70s country-rock sound in Los Angeles, and working as accompanist with longtime ally Karla Bonoff and Wendy Waldman.

opening for Steve Poltz - 7:30 pm185 East Santa Clara Ventura CA 93001 US 805-652-1137
Once you see a Steve Poltz show you're hooked for life. Thoroughly entertaining, thought-provoking, zany & just plain awesome. From Steve's bio: He trick-or-treated at Liberace’s house, planned a two-day stay in Amsterdam that ended a month later with him escaping the city under the cover of darkness, and was Bob Hope’s favorite altar boy. Alone, these anecdotes go well with a fistful of peanuts at a cocktail party. But on top of these add that this person also co-wrote the longest-running song on the Billboard Top 100, had a debut solo album that earned three and a half stars in Rolling Stone, and was awarded the title of “San Diego’s Most Influential Artist of the Decade” at the San Diego Music Awards. What you end up with is one of the most engaging, twisted, and prolific songwriters of our time - Steve Poltz.
JULIE CHRISTENSEN/STONE CUPID Chanteuse Julie Christensen has honed her chameleon craft. In well over a hundred shows she has sung Joan of Arc to Leonard Cohen's flame. She's also sung with Steve Wynn, John Doe, Exene Cervenka, Lou Reed and Van Dyke Parks. With Chris D., she headed up the post-punk rock band Divine Horsemen. Others utilizing Julie's kaleidoscope talents have been as far-flung as Iggy Pop, PiL, Robben Ford, and k.d. lang. Her two acclaimed independent Stone Cupid albums are a soulful hybrid of jazz and folk. Buy tix and make dinner reservations for a table. 805 652-1137

Time plows forward, as does the urge to make music, for some. Both can be unstoppable forces. So here we have the 25th anniversary (a year late, thanks to the Tea Fire, and other factors) of Headless Household, Santa Barbara's peculiar and ongoing, eclectic excuse of a band. Mixing up mixed-up elements of jazz, free improvisation, avant-Americana, Europeana, rock, soul and a new strain of Braziliana (in time for the bossa nova's 50th birthday), the band presents its first concert in the historic Lobero Theatre, on Friday, March 19, coinciding with the CD release party for its eighth feature-length album, the double-disc item called Basemento.
